The latest xkcd strip prompted me to write this post. A few weeks back, as I was browsing through my old thesis (note to others: Don’t do this kids. No good will come out of going through your old theses), I couldn’t help notice that the left margin was ever so slightly larger than necessary. I went back to the code that I used to typeset the thesis. As I tried to compile the code again, I got a couple of weird errors. It didn’t take me long to find that there was an unmatched \begin{itemize} in the very first page of the thesis. So, according to
, my entire thesis is essentially just a bulleted list with two points; the first one is three lines long and the second one is around 50 pages long with around a dozen tables and figures. Somehow, the phrase ‘biggest facepalm moment’ doesn’t quite capture what I felt at that time. This tiny gif does though.
After the hundreds of hours I sank into this thesis…. Well, an unmatched parenthesis might trouble you for a day, but that unmatched itemize statement will haunt me for the rest of my life. FML
